I was just on the phone to my elderly aunt in Scotland and mentioned the attacks in Paris, explaining that they occurred in the area where I used to live. She listened for a millisecond before interrupting, ‘Did you see that someone was murdered in Montrose?’ Pause, intake of breath. ‘The body was cut up. They’ve been going through the drains and closed the recycling centre.’
