Mulletfest

August 20, 2021

I stopped this young man on the street to suggest he enter the Mulletfest, an actual competition here in Australia. ‘You’re a winner,’ I said, complimenting him on the glossy waterfall of curls at the back of his head.

He replied that he and 20 or so of his friends had grown mullets to support a mental health charity.

‘All the others cut theirs off after we reached our goal but I’ve kept mine,’ he said, not without pride. ‘It’s been going for about a year and has now become me.’

I asked if the mullet affects his popularity, ‘You know, with girlfriends?’

He shook his head. ‘You’d be surprised.’ He was a thoroughly good sport.
