My 83-year-old mother is about to have a cataract operation on one eye. A nurse advised Mum that her sight will change for that eye. She will need a new prescription for her glasses. ‘She told me that I should see an optometrist in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, I could simply take the lens out of one side of my glasses,’ Mum said. ‘I told her I’m not doing that. I’d look bloody stupid.’ The nurse protested. She wouldn’t look silly. It’s quite a common thing to do. Mum laughed. ‘I’ve got those lenses that darken when I go outside.’
