It was go, go, go today: buying and wrapping Christmas presents, and driving all over town. My mother was behind me every step of the way, telling me to hurry up, to change lanes, to indicate, to put the washing out, to bring it in.

‘Mum, I’m going as fast as I can,’ I said. ‘In every job I’ve ever done, I’ve been known for my efficiency, quality of work and creativity.’

Mum narrowed her eyes and gave me a ‘duh’ look. ‘Don’t talk shit, Diane.’
