Girl Birds

For the past week or so, two male blackbirds have been fighting in my mother’s garden. It’s almost springtime in New Zealand.

They’re probably fighting over a female, I suggested. ‘Have you seen any girl birds?’

‘Not yet,’ Mum replied. ‘At the rate they’re going, they’ll be too exhausted to do anything by the time one turns up.’
