I asked my 84-year-old mother what she would like me to make for dinner. Soup, perhaps?
I have a great recipe for cauliflower and broccoli soup, I said.
‘No, soup is not a good idea,’ she replied. ‘The doctors have told me to watch my fluid intake.’
I gave her a hard look.
She was drinking her second beer at the time.
