My 84-year-old mother wanted to make chow-chow pickle. It’s a delicious turmeric yellow relish made from green tomatoes, cauliflower, cucumber, onions, mustard and several different spices.
However, when she went to make it, she realised her sister-in-law had borrowed her pickle book. When she went to pick it up, the sister-in-law gave her a container of celery seeds, one of the key ingredients.
Mum left her house and drove straight to the shops to buy more celery seeds.
‘But you were just given celery seeds,’ I said.
Mum shook her head. ‘I want fresh seeds. I don’t know how old hers were.’
