Years ago, my nephew Callum was suspended from high school for climbing onto the roof of a school building and putting orange road cones along the ridge line.
My mother was outraged. OUTRAGED. She marched into the school to see to the deputy principal.
‘How bloody stupid,’ she told him. ‘They were just being boys. Of course 14-year-old boys do stupid things. You can’t tell me you didn’t do stupid things when you were a boy.’
Thereafter, whenever Callum got into trouble, the deputy principal would tell him, ‘Why don’t you go call your grandmother.’
