A Hard Case

July 29, 2021

My mother’s neighbour’s house was broken into the day before yesterday. A woman was seen running out of the house after the alarm sounded and jumping into a van parked in the driveway.

Today a tall man came to my mother’s house. ‘Who are you?’ she asked. He pointed to his chest. ‘Can’t you read this?’ he replied. ‘No, of course I can’t,’ said Marion. ‘I’ve just had an injection in my eye and can hardly see a bloody thing.’

The tall man laughed and explained that he was a policeman. He was investigating the burglary and wanted to know if Marion had seen anything. Of course she hadn’t. ‘I didn’t even hear the bloody alarm.’

Later, Mum found out that the policeman went next door and told the neighbours, ‘She’s a bit of a hard case, isn’t she?’
