I think one of the things you absolutely need as a novelist is stamina. A book can take years to write and you’ve got to be able to stay on the bronco until the ride is over. The trick is to keep driving forward while inhabiting the book you’re writing. You need to be able to survive – live even – with doubts and setbacks. But there are moments, sometimes days, when you feel capable of creating work of authenticity and beauty.
